Heartbreak Ridge
Heartbreak Ridge involves the actions of a small group of U.S. Marines during the American invasion of Grenada in 1983. A hard-nosed, hard-living Marine gunnery sergeant clashes with his superiors and his ex-wife as he takes command of a spoiled recon platoon with a bad attitude.

For a war film, Heartbreak Ridge is oddly lighter in spirit than many of Eastwood's other films from this period.

Eastwood's clearly having a ball as a gravel-throated solider man.

Set during the Grenada War, Clint Eastwood's war movie is a formulaic, old-fashioned actioner wearing its ideology on its sleeves.
October 15, 2005
Clint Eastwood is at his macho, insubordinate best in this exuberant, salty military movie with more memorable lines and funny moments than most comedies.

A few Cubans with AK47s isn't exactly "The Guns of Navarone." At the end, you can't decide whether Eastwood and his platoon should get medals or merit badges.

You may not always like Eastwood's films, but you seldom get downright bored by them.
July 07, 2010
Heartbreak Ridge offers another vintage Clint Eastwood performance.

We have seen this story in a hundred other movies ... But Eastwood, as the producer, director and star, caresses the material as if he didn't know B movies have gone out of style.

To tell the truth, the Grenada Incursion looks even sillier on film than it did in the headlines. War is not hell, it's big box office.
May 20, 2003
As the gritty, raspy-voiced sergeant, Mr. Eastwood's performance is one of the richest he's ever given.

The film belongs to Eastwood. Now looking increasingly like an Easter Island statue, he has a voice pickled in bourbon, a tongue like razor wire, and a body so full of shrapnel that he can't walk through airport metal detectors.
